Texas Tech football’s Brendan Sorsby’s attorney makes statement that has fans calling BS

After facing an ineligibility ban due to violating the NCAA’s rules on sports gambling, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been granted a preliminary injunction that prevents the NCAA from punishing the Cincinnati transfer and will clear the way for him to suit up for the Red Raiders this season.

Sorsby had wagered around $90,000 on professional and collegiate sports during four years as a college football athlete. That included 40 bets involving Indiana football when he was a member of the team as a freshman in 2022. A Texas judge ruled that Sorsby’s attorneys demonstrated he will suffer a “probable, imminent, and irreparable injury” if he were ineligible to play for Texas Tech in 2026.

“It is a just result,” Sorsby’s attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, said about the ruling. “Brendan gets to devote himself to his team and the education of athletes and the dangers of gambling addiction. He will continue his treatment, miss two games, and there is no injury to the competitive integrity of the NCAA. It is what we proposed and what the NCAA should have accepted had it been true to its promises to prioritize the welfare of athletes.”

College football fans are not happy about the ruling or the statement from Kessler. Pete Thamel’s tweet of Kessler’s statement is littered with comments disagreeing with the decision regarding the Texas Tech signal caller. Fans view the ruling as a slippery slope in the NIL era. Many also view college football as having a lack of integrity, and the justification behind Sorby’s newfound eligibility being a load of crap.

Sorsby will miss Texas Tech’s first two games of the season as part of a penalty proposed by his attorneys, but all signs point to him being back on the football field sooner rather than later. The NCAA is expected to appeal the ruling.
