Texas A&M lands former Tennessee starter in transfer portal

The Texas A&M Aggies have been a busy team in the transfer portal, landing the commitment of one of the better guards in the portal in PJ Haggerty as well as guard Lukas Walls. Texas A&M landed another intriguing commitment out of the transfer portal on Thursday with the addition of Cade Phillips, as per Portal Updates.

Cade Phillips joins Texas A&M after playing the last three seasons at Tennessee. Phillips was limited to only 10 games last year due to a season-ending shoulder injury. Now heading into his final season of college basketball eligibility, Phillips could be on the verge of a breakout.

He was seemingly ready for a bigger role last year as a junior, starting in nine of the 10 games he played in at a little over 16 minutes per game. That was on the heels of coming off the bench in all 38 games he played in as a sophomore in 2024-25.

As a junior, Phillips averaged 3.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots with splits of 65.4 percent shooting from the field and 30.8 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Phillips has been an efficient shooter from 2-point range during his college career, shooting above 60 percent in all three of his seasons at Tennessee.

The Aggies are coming off a season in which they reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year, and to the round of 32 for the third straight season. This past year was the program’s first under new head coach Bucky McMillan. McMillan was hired after Buzz Williams left to become the head coach at Maryland.

In his first year, McMillan led the Aggies to an overall record of 22-12, and 11-7 in SEC play.
