The Vintage Stakes could be a showdown between Godolphin’s Al Hudaiba and Ballydoyle’s HAFFNER. The former has more on his CV after four runs, with three wins and just one blemish when he jinked at Yarmouth in May with the race at his mercy and sent Tom Marquand to the floor.

He won this month’s Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in gritty fashion as Aidan O’Brien’s Abraham Lincoln faltered late on, but he may not get the same relief from Haffner, a winner over the same course and distance at Newmarket on that card.

He made the running there and may do so again at a track where it can often pay to be on the front end. Ryan Moore can get the fractions and his Justify colt is still open to plenty of progress on his third run.

SCANDINAVIA can emulate the likes of Big Orange and four-time winner Stradivarius as recent back-to-back winners of the Goodwood Cup.

Last year he was the first three-year-old since Stradivarius to bag the race and, like the Gosdens’ star, he returns as an Ascot Gold Cup winner now having won that major prize in June.

He only just repelled the late challenge of Trawlerman that afternoon, but he’s taken to uphold the form with a horse four years his senior, despite the runner-up threatening to be sharper with that run behind him.

16:10 Goodwood – Naana’s Sparkle @ 10/1

The fastest five furlongs in British racing awaits the 24-strong field in this Goodwood dash. Being on the front end is rarely a negative over track and trip, with those further back very much hostages to fortune in a field as big as this.

NAANA’S SPARKLE is one that operates on or close to the pace and the Twilight Son gelding has shown improved form in three runs this season since moving to trainer Lemos Souza from Alice Haynes.

He’s added wins at Yarmouth on turf and, this month, over 5f at Southwell on the Tapeta from a 3lb lower mark than he races off now.

He acts on any ground and has a win and a close third from two runs at this venue, ensuring he makes appeal back at Goodwood in current mood for a yard that has saddled four winners from their last ten runners.
