New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips hopes to face a more “human" Jasprit Bumrah and hopes the pace spearhead has an off day in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on March 08, 2026, in Ahmedabad.

The Indian speedster has been a constant in India’s success in the tournament, bowling with impeccable control and executing his lengths, yorkers and slower balls to perfection. He has been a thorn in the side of batting teams when they play against the co-hosts.

Phillips lauded the Indian fast-bowler’s skill and expertise but hoped to see him have an off day when the two sides meet on Sunday.

"Bumrah is a fantastic bowler. He's got so many variations. He hits the blockhole at the death incredibly well. And he's human as well. He is allowed to have a bad day, as are the rest of us. So hopefully we have a good day against him," Phillips told reporters on Friday, March 06 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Bumrah was key in India’s victory over England in the semi-final in Mumbai on Thursday. In a game where 499 runs were scored in the playable 40 overs, Bumrah’s figures of 1/33 from his four overs remained an outlier, with his top-notch execution thwarting the England batters at every step of the way.

Phillips talked about how England looked to play Bumrah out while targeting other bowlers. He later continued that his team must not look to play Bumrah out but instead capitalise on any slip-up offered by the quick.

"The way England played him yesterday, in terms of trying to take on the last two overs, and give themselves as much of a chance as possible. That was the tactic that they had employed. It's not necessarily going to be that, per se. As I said, a bowler is allowed to miss, and if he happens to miss, we do have to put it away. That also means that if he does bowl well, we do have to accommodate for other things and adapt," he concluded.

New Zealand's hopes of going all the way depend on how well they can negate Bumrah's threat in the final, with the Indian speedster's skill being his ability to execute under pressure in crunch situations.
