The tournament opener was full of drama and madness, as Pakistan beat the Netherlands in a last-over finish to mark a winning start to their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. The Group A clash was held on Saturday, February 7, at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, where the Dutch batted first and set up an average total of 147 in 19.5 overs. 

The Netherlands started decently, with 50 runs on the board in the powerplay despite losing a couple of wickets. Knocks from Bas de Leede (30 off 25), Colin Ackermann (20 off 14), and skipper Scott Edwards (37 off 29) did set a platform for a solid finish to the innings, but Salman Mirza (3-25), Abrar Ahmed (2-23), and Saim Ayub (2-7) staged a comeback for the Men in Green.

Pakistan's start to their reply was a thunderous one, as they whacked the ball to places during the powerplay overs to amass 61-2 after six overs. Come the 12th over, though, the Dutch pulled things back with a double-wicket maiden from Paul van Meekeren. Star batter Babar Azam (15 off 18) too succumbed to pressure off an Aryan Dutt delivery.

At one point, the equation was down to 29 off 12 balls, but the penultimate over spoilt all the hard work that the Dutch had done so far to keep the contest alive. Faheem Ashraf took Logan van Beek to the cleaners, getting 24 runs off the nineteenth over, which turned the game on its head. It took four more deliveries for the Men in Green to confirm their two points, as Ashraf sealed the victory with a boundary.

For his breathtaking display with the bat under extreme pressure, Ashraf was also adjudged the Player of the Match. Next up, Pakistan are slated to face the United States of America on February 10 at the same venue, whereas the Netherlands will be facing Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in yet another Group A clash on the same day.
