Victory for the South American nation tonight would equal their best ever performance at the World Cup, having reached the quarter final on just one previous occasion, back in 2014, the last time the tournament was played in the western hemisphere.

Switzerland head into tonight’s match having lost just one of their last 18 matches in all competitions dating back to the end of 2024, and without defeat in any of their last seven, of which they’ve won their last three.

Murat Yakin’s side are also flying under the radar this World Cup having finished top of their group after being held to a disappointing draw with Qatar in their opener before recovering well with victories over Bosnia and co-hosts Canada.

The round of 32 then saw the A-Team, as they’re nicknamed, comfortably get the better of Algeria, with Breel Embolo and Nottingham Forest’s Dan Ndoye scoring early goals in each half to send them through to the last 16 for the sixth major competition in a row.

Switzerland’s best performance at the World Cup is a run to the quarter finals, which they’ve reached on three occasions but not since 1954, and one would have thought they would have taken a last 16 clash against Colombia at the start of the tournament to match their best showing at a World Cup in over 70 years.
