Storm’s Dominique Malonga becomes youngest ever to pull off impressive WNBA stat line

The Seattle Storm badly need a lifeline after suffering their ninth straight loss on Wednesday. They bowed to the Portland Fire, 94-89, at Moda Center.

They were in control of the game at the start of the fourth quarter, holding a seven-point lead. The Storm, however, could not put out the Fire. Portland outscored Seattle in the final period, 27-15, to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The Storm dropped to 3-10, the worst record in the Western Conference, while the Fire improved to 8-9.

For what it is worth, Seattle center Dominique Malonga looked impressive yet again. She finished with game-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds on top of three assists, two steals, and two blocks. She shot 12-of-19 from the field and only had one turnover.

According to StatMuse, the 20-year-old Malonga became the youngest player in league history to tally at least 25 points and 10 rebounds.

The Storm had high hopes when they drafted Malonga, who hails from France, with the No. 2 pick in last year’s draft. She showed promise, averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 14.3 minutes off the bench. She was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Malonga became just the fifth player in team history after Jewell Loyd, Ramu Tokashiki, Breanna Stewart, and Jordan Horston to make it to the All-Rookie Team.

With Ezi Magbegor out for several weeks due to a foot injury, Malonga has earned a starting role, increasing her numbers to 15.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 24.3 minutes.

With Seattle losing Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, and Gabby Williams in the offseason, Malonga has been tasked with carrying the squad.

They will try to end their dry spell against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.
