Steve Kerr makes candid admission on Warriors future after emotional moment with Steph Curry

And so an offseason full of questions begins for the Golden State Warriors.

Jalen Green’s 36-point performance in the NBA Play-In Tournament catapulted the Phoenix Suns into the playoffs on Friday night, with a 111-96 win ending the Golden State Warriors‘ season.

With the score at 85-78 late in the second-half, the Warriors appeared to be beginning a comeback thanks to a Steph Curry three-pointer.

But the Suns responded, launching seven unanswered points, punching their ticket into the playoffs as the Western Conference’s No. 8 seed at the expense of Golden State.

Towards the end of the game, Curry, along with Warriors veteran Draymond Green, shared a touching moment with head coach Steve Kerr, each taking a moment to embrace one another on the sidelines.

Kerr’s contract as Warriors head coach has now officially expired, and after the defeat which ends the Warriors’ 2025-26 season, questions are swirling about the future of the franchise.

Kerr has won four titles in his twelve years as Golden State’s head coach, and has offered little insight into whether or not he would like to remain in his current role.

After the loss, his postgame comments on Friday didn’t provide much more than a hint, but it appears a decision isn’t too far away.

“My plan is to take a little time, I don’t know,” Kerr said, via Underdog NBA.

“Take a week or two and eventually sit down and talk with [owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy].

“We’ve always had a great partnership and collaboration and just see where they are. I’ll tell them where I am, and we’ll talk about what’s next for the Warriors, what the plan is this offseason.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date.

“There’s a run that happens. When the run ends, it’s sometimes time for new blood and new ideas and all that.

In his time as head coach, Kerr and Curry have formed one of the most successful player-coach partnerships in NBA history.

“That’s part of the equation right? I mean, I don’t want to walk away from Steph,” Kerr continued.

“I’m definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA.

“I would never walk away from Steph, but all the stuff has to be aligned and right. So, those are all discussions that we’ll have.”

Kerr, Curry, and Green’s moment on the sidelines as their team was about to bow out of the play-in tournament appeared symbolic.

It was a striking image that may signal the beginning of the end of the Warriors dynasty and the last time fans see the trio in action together.

However, for Curry, he wasn’t exactly welcoming the impromptu moment between the three future Hall of Famers.

“I was kinda fighting it to be honest. For it to start with that conversation and that moment, it was definitely weird,” Curry told reporters.

“We’re human beings and we have to be able to acknowledge each other in that moment, but I don’t know if that’s a signal of anything.”

Green’s future is also unclear.

The 36-year-old was ejected alongside Suns guard Devin Booker with 1:04 remaining in the contest.

He was asked directly about his future during the post-game presser, and he provided a notably open-ended answer.

“I don’t know. I’m not retiring from basketball. I still love to play. I think I’m still pretty decent,” Green said. “But this league is an interesting one. Everything so for me — I hope I’ve done enough to still be here. Because at the end of the day, if I ain’t done enough, I don’t want to be here. I don’t ever want [the Warriors] to just keep me around because of what I’ve done.”

He added, “Like, what can I still do? And by the way, that’s not just playing — that’s leadership, that’s helping bring the young guys along, that’s helping move the organization forward. Hopefully I’ve done enough to still be here. But if not, we’ll see what it looks like. It’s been a hell of a run.”

“If they want me here, I’ll be right here.”
