Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gives ‘grounded’ take ahead of first playoff game

With the San Antonio Spurs preparing to take on the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, it will be a new experience for superstar Victor Wembanyama. As the Spurs’ big man in Wembanyama gets ready for his first playoff series, he would speak more on the emotions heading into the games against the Trail Blazers.

There is no denying how impressive Wembanyama and San Antonio have been this season, going from 13th in the Western Conference last season, all the way up to second with 62 wins. With the team being one that many have talked about being a contender for the championship, Wembanyama would give his thoughts on the dreams he has in the NBA.

Asked by ClutchPoints’ Spurs beat reporter Hector Ledesma, Wembanyama would express how it’s human for someone like himself to think of how it could end with a title, but the goal for him and the team is “to stay grounded.”

“I can’t really help it, but dream about it, of course, but we have to stay grounded, stay in the moment. And before even thinking about Game 1, I have to think about showing up the right way… I practice, doing all my stuff, preparing, being locked in on the scouts. But yeah, I dream about it every day,” Wembanyama said.

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama ‘excited’ for playoff opportunity

While the ultimate goal is for the team to look at the present instead of what the future can hold, a fan still can’t help but feel excited for the Spurs, since it’s the first time the team has been in the playoffs in six years. Plus, the best players always cement themselves in the postseason, an opportunity that Wembanyama can do at 22 years old in his first playoffs.

“We’re so excited,” Wembanyama said, via Ledesma. “It’s becoming more real, more and more real that we are actually going to play in the playoffs. I’m excited to play in high-stakes games again.”

At any rate, it all starts in Game 1 of the first round against the Trail Blazers in San Antonio on Sunday.
