Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gets rib contusion update from Mitch Johnson
Victor Wembanyama is dealing with a rib contusion after suffering the injury in the San Antonio Spurs’ 115-102 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. With Wembanyama already ruled out for Wednesday’s contest against the Portland Trail Blazers, head coach Mitch Johnson reveals some good news regarding the injury.
While talking with media members hours before tipping off against the Trail Blazers, Johnson claimed that the Spurs’ 22-year-old center is making progress with his rib injury, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic. Johnson did not reveal Wembanyama’s status for Friday’s game vs. the Dallas Mavericks.
“[Wembanyama] is improving,” said Johnson. “We’ll just kind of take it day by day and see how it goes.”

With three games remaining on the schedule, including the matchup against Portland, the Spurs may choose to rest Victor Wembanyama until the start of the playoffs. San Antonio will, at the very least, be ranked as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. The postseason does not officially begin until April 18.
A rib contusion, which is essentially a bruised rib, can take three to six weeks to fully recover. The first one to two weeks tend to be the most painful. Pain usually goes significantly down after the first week and a half. If that is the case, then Victor Wembanyama should be good to go for the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
The Spurs have been one of the best teams in the league this season, with Wembanyama being one of the key ingredients to the club’s success. Through 63 games played in the 2025-26 campaign, the three-year veteran is averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game. He also owns a 51.0% field goal percentage while hitting 35.0% of his three-point attempts.
