Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gets real on last-second turnover vs. Knicks: ‘I messed up’

Victor Wembanyama is an uber-talented force of nature who is destined for great heights that not too many in the NBA have had the ability to reach. But even someone as elite as Wembanyama needs to go through some tough learning moments to reach his peak level. His late-game turnover during the San Antonio Spurs’ 105-104 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA Finals that doomed his team might be that learning moment.

In the dying seconds of the game, Wembanyama and the Spurs forced a crucial stop with the game tied at 104. The Spurs star controlled the board and started to bring the ball up. In his rush to get the ball up, he threw a pass to Stephon Castle, who wasn’t even looking at him. Wembanyama ended up throwing the ball off of Castle’s back, and to make matters worse, he fouled Jalen Brunson after the giveaway, sending him to the foul line for the free throw that sealed the game for the Knicks.

Wembanyama owned up to his mistake in his postgame presser, and he declared that this will only motivate him and the Spurs moving forward.

“I threw that one away. I messed up… We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point, it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely,” Wembanyama said in his postgame presser, via ClutchPoints Spurs beat reporter Hector Ledesma.

This was a backbreaking turnover for the Spurs, and Wembanyama could not make amends at the buzzer as he clanked a shot off the back iron to end the game.

Even Michael Jordan had to take his lumps in the playoffs before he broke through. The same goes for LeBron James, who failed in his first-ever trip to the NBA Finals. Wembanyama is going through his teaching moment, and the Spurs should be better off for it. They’re not out of this series in any way, anyhow.
