Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama delivers truth bomb ahead of first playoffs
Supported by a team that sports the NBA’s second best record and armed with size/skill set combination never seen in basketball, Victor Wembanyama has visions of grandeur. Especially considering the San Antonio Spurs domination of the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, it’s realistic to think the start of the playoffs could serve as the launch toward a championship. It’s something not lost on the generational talent.
ClutchPoints asked Wemby if he’s allowed himself to think about what this team could accomplish.
“Yeah. I can’t really help but dream about it, of course.”
The 7-foot-5 center then made sure to add a key qualifier as his team readies for a first round battle with the Portland Trail Blazers.
“But, we have to stay grounded. Stay in the moment. Before even thinking about game one, I have to think about showing up the right way; [how] I practice, doing all my stuff, preparing, being locked in on the scouts,” Wembanyama continued to ClutchPoints.
“But yeah, I dream about it every day.”
"I can't really help but dream about it, but we have to stay grounded…
I dream about it every day"

Victor Wembanyama isn’t feeling NBA Playoff vibes yet
The eyes of the basketball world have been on Wemby since even before he entered the NBA. A teenage marvel in his native France, the hype hit another level when he went first overall to the Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft.
ClutchPoints asked the 2024 Rookie of the Year if he’s felt a rise in attention as he enters his inaugural trip to the playoffs.
“Nah. Nah, not yet. I guess I’m going to feel it for sure more and more in the next days and when game time comes, for sure. Right now, comfortable with it.”
Wembanyama’s first trip to the NBA’s second season also serves as the Spurs return to a place they’ve lived for the better part of their storied franchise. Five-time NBA champions, the franchise has qualified for the playoffs a staggering 80% over their more than 50 years in the NBA.
“I haven’t been out in the city as much lately,” Wemby responded when asked if he’s noticed the playoff fever that’s caught the city. “Even though we’ve been on this home stretch, I haven’t been out in the city much lately.”
Wemby’s earliest playoff memories revolve around Spurs
Just 22 years old, Wembanyama is old enough to recall just one of the Spurs championships, though he’s well aware of their history.
“Of course, Spurs fans have a lot of memories of the playoffs, of all the dynasty days,” the two-time All-Star said of the days that centered on Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.
Wemby admitted that while he vividly remembered the Spurs most recent title, it’s the only one of the franchise’s runs he could recall.
“Some of my earliest NBA memories are the Finals between Miami and San Antonio. So yeah, I do have very good Spurs playoffs memories.”
NBA Champions in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007 as well, the Spurs, who knocked off the top-seeded Thunder four times this season, are a contender to win it all for the first time since 2017. This marks their first trip to the postseason since 2019 when they were the West’s seventh seed.
