Spurs’ Mitch Johnson delivers ‘positive’ Victor Wembanyama’s injury update

With just three games left in the 2025-26 regular season, the San Antonio Spurs are experiencing a crazy plot twist. During their win against the Philadelphia 76ers, star center and MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama went down with an upper-body injury. Wembanyama was able to finish the first half, but was ruled out of the second half with a left rib contusion.

After the game, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson gave an update about the injured center. Johnson said that he hasn’t heard anything since he exited the game, but that the fact that Wembanyama was able to finish the first half was a positive in his book.

“I know he came back and he just didn’t finish,” Johnson said, per Michael C. Wright of ESPN. “At halftime, I was told he wasn’t coming back. I haven’t heard anything else up to this point. I think it would be a positive that he felt like he could come back, and he played the last four or five minutes of the half. So, that’s a positive from my perspective.”

Wembanyama suffered the injury after a collision with 76ers forward Paul George. George was trying to make a play for the ball when he collided with the Spurs center at half-court. Wembanyama crumpled to the floor in pain, holding his left shoulder. After a few moments of being tended to by the medical staff, Wembanyama headed back to the locker room.

Wembanyama would return to the floor after a few minutes and would play almost all of the last six minutes of the quarter. However, he would ask for a substitution again with just under a minute left in the game. The Spurs star would not return to the court. He finished the game with 17 points on 7-11 shooting, five rebounds, and three blocks.

The Spurs have the second seed all but locked up. The bigger concern for Wembanyama is his eligibility for the end-of-season individual awards. He needs one more game to reach the 65-game threshold for the individual and All-NBA awards.
