Spurs HC Mitch Johnson shares De’Aaron Fox injury update before NBA Finals

The NBA Finals are set, with the San Antonio Spurs scheduled to take on the New York Knicks in Game 1 at home on Wednesday. While competing for a title is exciting, there are injury concerns regarding De’Aaron Fox. Head coach Mitch Johnson shared an update on Fox’s status.

While talking with media members on Tuesday, Johnson did not have an official status for Fox. However, he did admit that the 28-year-old point guard was at least trending in the right direction ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

“Not sure to answer the question 100%, but it feels like it’s moving in a better direction,” said Johnson about Fox’s injury status. “With rest, I hope he’s better tomorrow than he is today, so on and so forth.”

De’Aaron Fox has missed just two games so far in the playoffs, as he did not play in Games 1 or 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. As Johnson pointed out, the nine-year veteran has been dealing with a right ankle sprain since the second-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Even so, the two-time All-Star has played a vital role whenever he is on the court for the Spurs. He enters the NBA Finals averaging 16.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43.5% from the field and hitting 31.1% of his three-point attempts.

His official status for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Knicks likely won’t be revealed until about the 5 p.m. EST deadline on Tuesday, as the first contest of the series tips off at 8:30 p.m. EST.
