Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox links up with Mike Brown for Kings reunion after Knicks’ NBA title

The San Antonio Spurs let another chance slip away in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, losing 94-90 to the New York Knicks and seeing their hopes of winning a championship officially come to an end.

De’Aaron Fox’s nightmare series continued in this game, as he had arguably his worst start-to-finish performance of what was a brutal series. He finished with seven points on 3-of-15 shooting and 1-of-8 from 3-point range in 37 minutes, and consistently came up empty when the Spurs needed him to make a play.

This was Fox’s first deep playoff run after many years spent with the Sacramento Kings, where he was coached by Mike Brown. After Brown’s Knicks took down Fox’s Spurs in the NBA Finals, the veteran point guard went and found his old head coach to show him some love.

Fox is catching a lot of heat as a result, especially after his blunders that cost the Spurs down the stretch of Game 4. By the end of the series, many fans were calling for Fox to either be benched or taken off the ball to let Dylan Harper, who had a great series, do more of the on-ball work.

The Spurs now face a very tough decision with Fox coming up this offseason. He is on a max contract that has four years remaining, but the Spurs already have Harper and Stephon Castle as a young, up-and-coming backcourt. It’s unclear if there’s room for Fox in that equation moving forward or if the Spurs would be willing to play a three-guard starting lineup next season.

Fox’s trade value is another question coming off of a series where he clearly was not up to standard. He was dealing with an ankle injury throughout the playoffs, but it’s hard to tell if that’s what was impacting him. Either way, it would take a lot of convincing for a team to give up assets to take on Fox’s contract coming off of such a disastrous series, even if it’s the right thing for the Spurs to do given where the rest of their team stands.
