Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox gets ‘stupid things’ review from Stanley Cup Final coach
The San Antonio Spurs suffered the worst collapse in NBA Finals history on Wednesday evening, blowing a 29-point lead to the joy of the fans in attendance, ESPN commentators calling the game, and millions of New York Knicks fans across the world. The Spurs are now on the brink of elimination, having scored just 30 points in the second half on Wednesday.
Arguably the biggest mistake of the night came with under 20 seconds left, when the Spurs got a much-needed stop and De’Aaron Fox tracked down the ball up by one point, with no need to shoot. Instead, he went up for a layup that was blocked by OG Anunoby, and the Knicks got the ball and won the game.
One of the few people to come to Fox’s defense after the game was former Stanley Cup Final coach Tortorella, who is the coach of the Vegas Golden Knights of the NHL.
“I think the intensity and just the moment that’s going on in the Finals now — they’re human beings and it just overcomes you sometimes to do some stupid things. Who can explain some of the things that’s gone on in this series — one thing as a coach you look for, as long as they care, as long as they’re trying — that’s all you can ask, and there will be some crazy things that go along with it,” he said, per Jonny Lazarus of Daily Faceoff on X, formerly Twitter.
While Tortorella may have had a more sympathetic view of things, that wasn’t the case for most Spurs fans on social media, who were demanding a trade of the point guard following the disaster.
The Spurs will have one more chance to salvage their season on Saturday night for Game 5 at home.
