Spelman College appoints co-Miss Spelman’s amid pageant controversy

The 43rd Spelman College pageant took place on April 11th and crowned a winner, but a scoring error has sparked controversy over the result. During the pageant, seven students competed for the title of Miss Spelman College, with Jillian Collier named the winner. Kinsley Wilson was named first runner up as Sarah Sloan, Madison Corzine, and Zaria Samuel finished as second, third, and fourth runner up.

But, per a report by 11 Alive, a post-pageant review found a “technical discrepancy in the scoring process.” In addition to promising to overhaul policy, Spelman also announced that both Collier and Wilson will serve as co-Miss Spelman College. In a statement to 11 Alive, Collier expressed her discontent with the decision.

“Collier said she “vehemently disagrees” with the co-queen decision, calling it “unfair and unjust,” and said she feels she is being cheated out of the title,” the report read.

The Miss Spelman College pageant is an annual competition that crowns a student ambassador and leader of the Miss Spelman College Court that represents the institution in the community and often competes in the Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame pageant. Over the past few years, Spelman’s pageant culture has gone viral on social media

The typical result of HBCU campus queen pageants is a single winner, with some HBCUs having attendants, which has led to Spelman’s decision being widely discussed on social media. In a letter to the campus community obtained by 11 Alive, Spelman College representatives apologized to the contestants, their family members, and those affected.
