Sparks’ Kelsey Plum, Cameron Brink injury updates aren’t encouraging

The Los Angeles Sparks will be without Kelsey Plum for at least four weeks, as the 31-year-old guard is dealing with an injury in her lower left leg. With the club taking on the Toronto Tempo on Thursday, the franchise received an update regarding Plum’s situation, along with an update on Cameron Brink’s left ankle sprain.

Reports indicate that both Plum and Brink did not travel with the team on Thursday for the game against the Tempo, according to Sparks’ reporter John W. Davis. Neither player will travel to the club’s next road game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday, June 27, either.

“Kelsey Plum and Cameron Brink are not traveling with the Los Angeles Sparks to Toronto and Indiana, according to coach Lynne Roberts,” reported Davis.

While the Sparks are aware that Plum will be out at least four weeks, the team was informed that Brink will be out for at least the next two weeks, per Davis. Head coach Lynne Roberts said as such at the pregame press conference for Thursday’s game against the Tempo.

“BREAKING: Cameron Brink will be reevaluated in 2 weeks for her sprained ankle injury, according to Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts during her pregame media availability before playing the Toronto Tempo Thursday,” Davis said.

With two top players on the roster out, the Sparks are going to have to get creative to score points. Lynne Roberts explained that Kelsey Plum’s absence alone is a huge loss for the team’s offense and that it will take more than one player on the roster to fill the void, according to Davis. Roberts even admitted that she has to step her game up as a coach with the nine-year veteran ruled out.

“PREGAME: Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts said it is a big deal that Kelsey Plum is out for a month. However, she said the team has to replace her production by committee,” claimed Davis. “She said it has to be everybody because they will not have Plum to bail them out offensively. Coach Roberts said she also has to be better with Plum out. She also said Plum’s absence is not an excuse to compete to the team’s best ability.”
