Sources: Steve Kerr to meet with Warriors’ braintrust by end of week to determine future

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is expected to meet with owner Joe Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., and other high-ranking executives by the end of the week to determine whether he will remain with the franchise, league sources told ClutchPoints.

Among the immediate topics at hand, Kerr’s future and the organization’s philosophy will take precedence over everything else.

Although Kerr has stated publicly and privately behind the scenes to those with the organization throughout the season that he would like to continue forward, the organization has been uncertain about the direction of the franchise at the end of Stephen Curry’s career, sources said.

As far as what he ultimately wants, many within the organization aren’t even sure if Kerr will enter these meetings wanting to sign a new contract and return for at least one more year. Retirement has been on the horizon for Kerr, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green over the last few seasons, and the expectations, both from some within the organization and externally, was that these three would retire together.

That no longer appears to be the case, with Kerr giving serious thought to his future entering these meetings. Not to mention, his reflective comments on his coaching tenure following Golden State’s play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday and his embrace with both Curry and Green have led to more mystery about his future.

Even Green himself admitted recently that this moment with Kerr at the end of the game in Phoenix and the mood surrounding everything points in the direction of Kerr’s departure.

Lacob, Dunleavy, and other high-ranking Warriors officials want to have a clear vision with all parties aligned, especially since the franchise has no desire to settle for complacency.

Throughout the years, Lacob has always made it clear that his organization’s championship efforts won’t die out with Curry, Kerr, and Green, and that is why multiple years of postseason disappointment since their championship run in 2022 have led to major conversations needing to be had at the start of this offseason.

Should the Warriors’ owner and others decide it is time for an organizational shift involving a new head coach, sources said Kerr will be understanding and accept such a decision for the betterment of the franchise.

Kerr, who has been with the Warriors since the start of the 2014-15 season, entered the 2025-26 NBA season in the final year of his contract. While there were no extensive talks about a contract extension before the season, Kerr admitted he wasn’t worried about coaching the team not knowing about his future being secure.

Regardless of how certain individuals in the organization feel, some of whom would be willing to give Kerr a blank contract and let him fill in the years and amount to keep him as the head coach, a consensus decision will be made by the Warriors’ braintrust, one that aligns with Kerr and how he feels about the franchise moving forward.

The family atmosphere that this organization has built under Kerr’s leadership is the main reason why both sides, the coach and the front office, want to hear one another’s thoughts on everything. Golden State’s leadership would never fire Kerr, just like he would never leave them high and dry without a vision for the future.

Although it may be time for a change and Kerr’s departure after one of the most successful tenures of any coach in NBA history, that decision will not be made by one person alone. Input from Kerr, Lacob, Dunleavy, and others included in the meetings expected to take place by the end of the week will all factor into a consensus decision being made, sources said.

Once a decision is made on whether Kerr will return, other major pieces to the Warriors’ offseason puzzle will begin to be sorted out, including an upcoming contract extension with Curry, as well as Green’s immediate future with the organization.

Team sources have indicated that major roster changes will take place if the decision for Kerr to no longer coach the team is made.

Despite the support from Curry, Green, Jimmy Butler, and the entire roster to continue coaching, Kerr’s future with the Warriors will be decided in a matter of days, a decision that could completely change the trajectory of what was one of the most dominant eras any team has had in NBA history.
