Sophie Cunningham makes suggestion to fans after baptism announcement

As part of recommitting to her faith, Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has gotten re-baptized, and she has a suggestion for her fans.

The standout WNBA guard took to X, formerly Twitter, to respond to a video of her baptism from the weekend before, saying, “Loving Jesus is fun, try it [brown heart emoji].”

According to her original post on TikTok, Cunningham revealed that she had been baptized as a young child. However, she was “feeling a tug on my heart to do it on my terms as an adult.”

On Sunday, Apr. 12, 2026, Cunningham re-signed with the Fever. She spent the 2025 season with them, but she became an unrestricted free agent for the first time heading into the 2026 WNBA season.

Ultimately, she chose to return to Indiana. Cunningham signed a one-year deal with the team to remain there for the 2026 season.

Cunningham is coming off a solid year that ended abruptly with an injury. She suffered a torn MCL during the Fever’s game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025. Cunningham went down with an injury during the first half of the game, and she didn’t return for the rest of the season.

She was playing well before her injury occurred. Cunningham had to step up in place of other injured stars like Caitlin Clark. She was averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game before her injury. She played in 30 games, starting 13 of them, during the season.

Before her stint with the Fever, Cunningham spent the first six seasons of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. They drafted her in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft out of Missouri.

During her collegiate career, Cunningham was a star at Missouri. She was named First-team All-SEC every year from 2017 to 2019. Additionally, she won SEC Freshman of the Year and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2016.
