Sophie Cunningham explains what led to her viral pointing meme

It was no Caitlin Clark, no problem for the Indiana Fever on Saturday night. Indiana defeated LA 111-87 on June 27th, giving them their 11th win on the season. One Fever player pulled back the curtain on one viral play from earlier in the week in a recent interview.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham explained what happened leading up to her viral pointing meme during a recent podcast episode.

“Really [DeWanna Bonner] is the one that did something extra then Caitlin got the tech, so I walked out there and literally talking to the ref,” Cunningham said via Show Me Something. “…I was like now Caitlin got one but why didn’t she get one? Because if Caitlin’s gonna get one then she should have got one. It shouldn’t have been one or the other.”

Cunningham got into a heated exchange with Bonner on June 22nd in Indiana’s 86-77 win over Phoenix. Both players pointed at each other for an extended period of time. Cunningham had an intense expression on here face, which probably helped the clip go viral.

“I was just kind of pointing and she’s like ‘don’t you point at me’ and I was like ope shouldn’t have said that,” Cunningham said before making the same pointing gesture again. “And I didn’t say a word.”

The exchange between Cunningham and Bonner came after an altercation between Bonner and Clark. Ultimately, five players received technical fouls and Myisha Hines-Allen was ejected from the game shortly afterwards.

All of that chippiness bled over into the next game, too. Clark received a cheap shot from Alyssa Thomas, which ended up resulting in a one-game suspension for Thomas. Cunningham added that Fever players did not see that happen on the court. Otherwise, they would have gone to Clark’s defense once again.

Hopefully Indiana can move past those distractions and continue winning games.

Next up for the Fever is a road game against the Aces. That matchup tips off at 7PM ET on Sunday, July 5th.
