Sidney Crosby gets brutally honest on Penguins’ 0-3 hole vs. Flyers

The highly-anticipated return of the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup Playoffs has been nothing short of a nightmare for Sidney Crosby and company.

The Pens are on the verge of being swept in their first-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers in the Battle of Pennsylvania after a 5-2 defeat in Game 3 on Wednesday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

They’ve scored just four total goals in the series, have been outdueled in almost every facet, and look nothing like the team that won 41 games during the 2025-26 regular season.

“There’s not much room for error when you’re in this position,” Crosby told reporters afterwards, per NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman. “That’s reality. The fact is, we’ve just got to win a game. That’s going to be our focus.”

“Now we’re going to see what we’re really made of,” Erik Karlsson added. “Now it’s do-or-die. The toughest game to win is that fourth one, so hopefully we can start by winning one.”

Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an Evgeni Malkin powerplay goal early in the first period — which Crosby assisted on — the Penguins were just unable to keep the positive momentum going.

“I liked our first period,” Pittsburgh head coach Dan Muse said. “There was flow to the game. I liked the first period. Thought there was things we were doing better there.”

That was definitely the team’s best period, and it all went downhill from there.

The Flyers scored three times in a span of six minutes in the middle stanza, and didn’t look back. Karlsson made things close with another tally with the man advantage midway through the third, but that’s as close as Pittsburgh would get.

Noah Cates restored the two-goal lead with eight minutes left in regulation, and Owen Tippett deposited an empty-netter in front of a loud and energized crowd in downtown Philly.

The Penguins have never come back from 0-3 down, and it’s going to take a herculean effort to even get back into the series the way the first three games have gone.

The Metropolitan Division archrivals get an extra day off before an elimination Game 4, which is set for just past 8:00 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
