Should Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs go No. 1 overall in fantasy football after Dan Campbell comments?
There is no doubting that Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most talented running backs in the NFL. The Detroit Lions star has racked up huge numbers throughout his career, making him one of the top weapons in fantasy football leagues. In fact, Gibbs ranked fifth amongst all NFL players in PPR points per game last season.
Despite his established track record, fantasy owners are still expecting him to take a step forward in 2026. Gibbs has shared carries with David Montgomery for his entire career. The Sonic and Knuckles duo was one of the best ball carrier combinations in NFL history, but Montgomery was traded to the Houston Texans this offseason.
There are even more carries to be had and touchdowns to be scored in Detroit now, especially because Montgomery often got the goalline opportunities in recent years. Head coach Dan Campbell has Gibbs believers even more excited after a press conference in which he confirmed Gibbs is in for a big year.
“He’s going to be our bellcow now,” Campbell said about his starting running back. “He became more of that last year, and we’re going to hang our hat on him quite a bit. We’re going to do a lot of things that we feel he does well, and I’ve mentioned this before, but he can run everything that we’ve got. He can run every scheme that anybody’s ever run. He is not just an outside runner; he is not just a space runner; he can create his own space in the middle.”

Gibbs was a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which is somewhat of a rarity for running backs these days. That fact makes it almost a surprise that the Lions hadn’t already handed him the keys to their offense. With a bigger role imminent for Gibbs, the Lions’ ball carrier might be the consensus number one overall pick in fantasy drafts this season.
