Shannon Sharpe gets real on Lakers’ chances vs. Thunder if Austin Reaves keeps struggling

The Los Angeles Lakers have a massive problem on their hands after dropping Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe isn’t holding back his criticism. Following the ugly 108-90 blowout loss on Tuesday night, Sharpe pinpointed exactly why Los Angeles stumbled, directing his frustration squarely at Austin Reaves and a disappearing supporting cast.

Speaking on a recent episode of the “Nightcap” podcast, Sharpe delivered a blunt reality check regarding the Lakers’ postseason survival hopes.

“But with Austin Reaves giving you these numbers, and the bench basically non-existent, you not gonna be able to beat OKC,” Sharpe said.

Sharpe hit the nail right on the head. Reaves endured an absolute nightmare offensively at Paycom Center. The dynamic guard simply could not find the bottom of the net, finishing the evening with a frigid eight points on a brutal 3-of-16 shooting performance from the floor. When your secondary scoring option goes ice cold against the top seed in the West, winning becomes a near impossibility.

LeBron James did everything he could to keep the visitors competitive. The veteran superstar poured in a game-high 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting, adding six assists and four rebounds. Unfortunately, James operated as a one-man show. The Lakers received zero help from their reserves, watching helplessly as the Thunder bench outscored them by a massive 34-15 margin.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma City capitalized on every Los Angeles mistake. Chet Holmgren dominated the paint, logging a monstrous double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Even with MVP finalist Shai Gilgeous-Alexander admitting he felt rusty while posting 18 points and six turnovers, the Thunder still cruised to an easy victory.

If the Lakers want to avoid falling into a dreaded 2-0 series hole on Thursday, Reaves must rediscover his shooting stroke immediately. As Sharpe pointed out, LeBron simply cannot beat a loaded, young Thunder squad all by himself.
