Senators rumors: Brady Tkachuk trade compensation could be dealt again before NHL Draft
The Ottawa Senators have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in over a decade. Now, the team will be looking towards the future, as the Senators have traded Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers.
In the trade, the Senators received plenty of draft compensation. They brought in two first-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, including one that the Panthers acquired earlier in the day in the Mackie Samsokevich trade. They also got a conditional 2029 first round pick, and a 2027 secon round selection. Senators general manager Steve Staios spoke on how this deal sets them up for the future.
“This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club,” said Staios. “We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”
Now it is being reported that the use of those picks that were acquired may have a different purpose than just picking up some prospects, according to Bruce Garrioch of TSN.
“Led to believe that Steve Staios is actively shopping those No. 9 and No. 25 selections before the draft Friday. Lots of interest,” Garrioch posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The Senators have plenty of draft capital this year to make moves. While they do not have a second-round pick, they have three picks in both the first and third rounds of the draft. The Sens are also looking for a top-six forward to play alongside Tim Stutzle. With the free agent market being thin in that regard, they could swing a trade for a player such as Mason McTavish.
The move would need to be made soon, though. The NHL Draft begins with the first round on Friday night.
