Sean Payton gets 100% real on presenting Drew Brees into Hall of Fame

Drew Brees was one of the best quarterbacks in the league during his time, and the NFL is recognizing him for that, enrishing him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2026 class next month. Brees was able to select the person he wanted to present him, and it was no other than Sean Payton, who was his head coach for the New Orleans Saints.

Payton was emotional when Brees asked over a video call. The now-Denver Broncos head coach was asked about the moment during training camp, and he was surprised by how everything went down.

“It caught me off guard,” Payton said. “I was with a group; we were getting ready to golf the next day. I have a droid phone, so I’d never really gotten a FaceTime. 
It was just a lot, being 15 years together, and honestly, the thing I remember talking to him later, and a lot of times for a number of reasons, those quarterback-head coach relationships, you kind of always take for granted. Yet sometimes, oftentimes, they don’t end like you’d want them to end, and I was really proud that it ended the way he wanted it to. I’m excited for him. As a coach, it was an honor in honor that someone would ask you to do that.”

It only felt right that Brees would select Payton as the guy to present him into the Hall of Fame. The two spent 15 years together in New Orleans and won Super Bowl XLIV, defeating the Indianapolis Colts. Brees retired after the 2020 season, and Payton stepped away from coaching after 2021, but then was traded to the Broncos in 2023.

Brees is second all-time in NFL history in passing yards, completions and touchdowns. He’ll enter the Hall of Fame alongside Luke Kuechly, Larry Fitzgerald, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri.
