Scottie Sheffler at The Masters: Best and worst moments from wife stopping his tears to cheeseburger-gate

Scottie Scheffler has been the most dominant golfer in the world over the last five years and Augusta National has often seen his very best.

Over the last four Masters Tournaments, Scheffler has finished T10, fourth and won twice – a brilliant show of consistency at the highest level.

Since his maiden career win in February 2022, Scheffler now has 16 PGA Tour wins and four major titles.

He is just one win away from joining Rory McIlroy as a Career Grand Slam champion and he’ll looking to join that illustrious club by claiming US Open glory in June.

Before that, he’ll want to set up another memorable summer by clinching a third Masters crown.

While this will be only his seventh appearance at Augusta, Scheffler has already done more at the famous course than most could wish for in a lifetime.

So, as he begins another tournament as the red hot favourite for glory, let’s look at Scheffler’s highs and lows at The Masters.

Opening major account

Scheffler had claimed a trio of PGA Tour wins in just 42 days prior to the start of the 2022 Masters so it was little surprise that he produced the goods at Augusta.

During his maiden major victory, he tied the 36-hole tournament record and eased to victory over the weekend with none of his rivals coming close.

Scheffler revealed after that he ‘cried like a baby’ on the Sunday morning of his victory due to overwhelming stress and pressure he felt and believing he was not ready to take the next step up in his career.

But for all he was feeling inside, he didn’t show it on the course.

Just as Cameron Smith did assert some early pressure on Sunday, Scheffler produced a stunning chip-in on the third hole to reestablish his lead and he never wavered.

His wife Meredith had help calm his nerves in the morning and was ready to congratulate her husband at the 18th green, too.

Scottie and Meredith have formed an incredible team during his rapid rise to the top and he’ll forever be thankful for her words of encouragement that Sunday morning.

A touch of class

Meredith was absent for Scheffler’s second Masters win two years later as she was preparing for the birth for their first child, Bennett.

Scheffler’s win in 2024 was just as dominant and he had at least a share of the lead right from Friday afternoon.

Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Ludvig Aberg and Bryson DeChambeau all had their moments but in truth, no one else came close.

Scheffler birdied six of his last 11 holes on Sunday to romp to victory by four strokes.

With Meredith not by his side on his victory lap up to the clubhouse, Scheffler called up his caddie Ted Scott to celebrate with him, making sure his bagman was front and centre, too.

It was a touch of class from the champion and showed the humility and grace that has made him such a popular winner.

Lessons learned

During the final round of the 2020 Masters, Tiger Woods recorded a shocking 10 on the famous par-3 12th hole at Augusta – the highest score of his professional career.

Woods then birdied five of his final six holes in a truly remarkable sequence of events.

Paired with him that day was Scheffler, who was making his Masters debut.

Scheffler finished in a tie for 19th that strange week in November and has since spoken about how Woods’ never-say-die attitude left a major impression on him.

Scheffler’s dominance over the last few years has seen him often be likened to Tiger in his pomp.

And maybe that autumnal round in 2020 especially has a lot do with it.

An embarrassing moment

Picking out Scheffler’s worst moments at The Masters isn’t easy given how incredible he has been at Augusta so far in his career.

But on moment certainly left him red-faced – that embarrassing double bogey on the final hole of his 2022 win.

With a five-stroke buffer, Scheffler found the 18th green in two and just needed to putt out to secure the title.

What followed was almost comical.

Scheffler proceeded to four putt, included two from inside three feet, as the patrons looked on in disbelief.

Scheffler laughed it off and it was soon forgotten as he celebrated his brilliant win.

He put it down to just the release of all that stress and anxiety that caused a momentary lapse.

Early round struggles

A strange quirk of Scheffler’s play at Augusta is his struggles over a certain trio of consecutive holes – but no, not at Amen Corner.

Holes 11, 12 and 13 are revered around the world as one of the best trios ever made.

Scheffler over his career has played those three holes in seven-under-par.

In contrast, he has always struggled at 4, 5 and 6 – shooting a collective 8-over-par, 15 shots worse than his performance around Amen Corner.

Flowering Carb Apple is a daunting par 3 that can play up to 240 yards, Magnolia is one of the toughest par 4s in the world and Juniper rarely offers up birdies.

But for Scheffler to have such a sustained struggle at those holes certainly seems odd.

He’ll probably play them in 10-under this year!

Cheeseburger-gate

While McIlroy’s Champions Dinner menu showed off his expensive tastes, Scheffler has now laid on two of them and, unfortunately for him, his choices have not always gone down well.

In 2023, Scheffler opted for Texan-style fare including firecracker shrimp, tortilla soup, ribeye steaks, blackened redfish and skillet-style cookies.

He also had his now-infamous ‘Scottie-style’ cheeseburger sliders which include some fries added in on top of the patty.

Last year, Scheffler nearly decided to serve up the exact same thing.

While he did tweak it slightly, some criticised him for being unimaginative and lacking the high-end refinement of past menus.

The humble, simplistic choices were very much in keeping with Scheffler’s demeanour but should he win again, maybe he’ll be a little bolder with his offerings.
