Scottie Scheffler sends classy message after Wyndham Clark’s US Open win
Wyndham Clark won the US Open on Sunday, beating Sam Burns by just one shot. He played in the final group with Scottie Scheffler, who just needs the US Open to complete the career grand slam. After falling short on Sunday, Scheffler issued a congratulatory message to Clark.
“Being in the arena is not for everybody, and I think it shows a lot about Wyndham, how he handled not only this golf course but I think the crowd today as well and is a well-deserving champion,” Scheffler said, per Normal Sport’s Kyle Porter.
The US Open crowd was not behind Clark at Shinnecock Hills. After he damaged a locker in Oakmont’s historic locker room last year, his apology was not seen as sufficient by many fans. That led to fans booing his good shots and cheering his bad shots all day long. Scheffler got the good end of that draw, with fans supporting him throughout the round.
Scheffler won the PGA Championship and The Open Championship last year, putting him on the doorstep of the Grand Slam. In his first attempt, he finished T-4, four shots behind Clark. Next year, he’ll get a second chance at Pebble Beach. Of the six men to win the grand slam, only Gary Player completed it with a US Open win.
Scheffler has not had his best season on the PGA Tour, securing only one win thus far. With one major to go this season, he is looking to erase that narrative. He would be the first man to successfully defend his Claret Jug title since Padraig Harrington in 2008.
Clark now has two US Open titles before Scheffler has his first. If the No. 1 player’s career ends like Phil Mickelson’s, without a US Open, Sunday will go down as a close call. But he gives all the credit to Clark, who hit the shots all day long.
