Scottie Scheffler reveals disadvantage at Masters after Round 1

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is looking to win his third green jacket this week at the 90th Masters Tournament. He captured his first two in 2022 and 2024, which means he has taken part in the ceremony in Butler’s Cabin four years straight.

Scheffler is on track to make it five (which would tie Jack Nicklaus for the longest-ever streak) after signing for a 2-under 70 on Thursday.

After his round, the four-time major winner detailed his round. He specifically revealed the disadvantage he faced during his opening round.

“There were a few putts that lipped out that I thought I had made. But other than that, a lot of really good stuff,” Scheffler said of his play.

He was then asked what was so difficult about going out in the second-to-last group on a Thursday.

“The golf course gets firmer. The greens get a little more chewed up. Typically, the wind is a bit more. I’m not sure if it was the case today with the wind. But the greens definitely got firmer. There’s a lot of traffic on the greens, with guys trying to read their putts and everything they need to do to get ready [to putt].

“Going out later is typically going to be harder than going out earlier. That’s just part of it, but I get to go out earlier tomorrow.”

Therein lies what makes the PGA Tour tournament structure near perfect. If a player gets the short end of the stick on the opening round, they usually will have an easier time playing on Friday.

Scheffler is three shots off the lead entering Friday. Sam Burns and defending champion Rory McIlroy each shot a 5-under 67 and hold a two-shot lead.
