Scottie Scheffler needs just 3 holes to tie for 2nd at Masters

Four-time major champion and two-time green jacket winner, Scottie Scheffler, had the second-to-last tee time for the opening round of the 90th Masters Tournament. Yet, after just three holes, Scheffler found himself in a tie for second place.

That is due to his stellar play at the start of his day.

After paring the par-4 1st, Scheffler made eagle on the famed par-5 2nd.

That vaulted him into red figures and onto the first page of the leaderboard. But the Ridgewood, New Jersey native wasn’t done. He birdied the next hole, the par-4 3rd. At that time, it moved him into a tie for second place with Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, and Patrick Reed.

McIlroy has since jumped to 4-under with a few holes left in his round.

Ironically, it is Scheffler’s close friend, Sam Burns, who holds the clubhouse lead. Burns signed for a 5-under 67 after his opening round, the lowest round at Augusta National in his career. Scheffler and Burns actually played practice rounds together every day this week at Augusta.

Scottie Scheffler is still in the midst of one of the greatest stretches of golf the professional world has ever seen.

From the start of the 2021-2022 PGA Tour season, Scheffler has amassed 20 victories. That includes winning the Masters in 2022 and 2024. Last year, he added two more major trophies to his case. Scheffler captured the PGA Championship and The Open.

He’ll look to join Rory McIlroy as the seventh man to ever win the career grand slam at the U.S. Open. But right now, his focus is on Augusta.

With a start like this, Scheffler will likely be in contention again.
