Scottie Scheffler accomplished an incredibly rare thing at the Masters

Scottie Scheffler gave it a run.

Sunday saw the world number one empty the tank at Augusta National in an effort to capture his third Masters title. He fell one stroke shy of Rory McIlroy who equaled him with two.

It was a herculean effort fitting of the player that the world has come to understand Scottie to be over the last handful of years. He remains the reigning champion at two of the other major championships in the PGA Championship and Open Championship, and he will surely contend there as the season progresses.

We should celebrate what Scottie did at Augusta though, and over the weekend specifically.

Scheffler posted 65 and 68 across his weekend rounds. This is impressive on any golf course, let alone at the golf course.

With these scores Scheffler became the first player since 1942 (which as the CBS broadcast noted is as far back as history can be traced with the Masters) to play the third and final rounds bogey-free at the Masters Tournament. Think about how preposterous that is.

This all speaks to the game we have seen from Scheffler this season. He has developed a habit of making matters difficult for him on Thursday and Friday before providing the rally of all rallies. Consider that here he sat at even par after Friday and was 12 shots back of Rory. After the weekend’s action McIlroy won the whole thing at 12-under with Scottie a lone stroke behind him.

It will be interesting to see how much more unstoppable Scottie can become in 2026 if he can smooth out his early rounds. Surely everybody else is hoping that he won’t.
