Sam Darnold drops ‘thankful’ take on Seahawks’ OC transition after losing Klint Kubiak

Following their triumph in Super Bowl LX, the Seattle Seahawks lost a valuable member of the squad after offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak was hired by the Las Vegas Raiders as head coach.

It did not take long for the Seahawks to find a replacement for Kubiak, signing San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury.

With Fleury, quarterback Sam Darnold will play for his seventh offensive coordinator in six years. The 28-year-old signal-caller, however, is not worried about the adjustment, noting that Fleury is not installing an entirely new system.

“Thankfully, it hasn’t been too much of a transition,” said Darnold in a report from ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

“It’s a lot of the same stuff, (with) Fleury obviously coming from San Francisco, but a couple different wrinkles here and there. So it’s been good that way to be able to get some of that same verbiage, but just a couple different wrinkles.”

Darnold and Fleury are quite familiar with each other, having been on the 49ers together in 2023, although the veteran quarterback only served as a backup.

The two-time Pro Bowler only had good things to say about Fleury.

“Fleury has been great. His command, his presence, the way that he installs it with the run game, pass game, his command over the entire system has been incredible,” added Darnold, stressing the importance of being a sponge in their OTAs.

Darnold shone with Kubiak’s playbook in his maiden stint with the Seahawks, tallying a career-best 67.7 passing percentage. He threw for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Henderson pointed out that Fleury will likely utilize similar strategies with Kubiak since they both spent time under 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Kubiak was Shanahan’s passing game coordinator in 2023.
