Sam Burns brought to tears by dad’s message after falling short at US Open

Sam Burns is still in search of his first win in a grand slam event after falling short in his quest to pull a come-from-behind win at the 2026 US Open.

Wyndham Clark led from start to finish of the tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, but Burns gave him a run for his money.

Burns shot a 67 on Sunday and was only behind Clark by a stroke down the stretch, but missed birdie putts on Nos. 17 and 18, as Clark held on to win the tournament, carding an overall score of 4-under 276. Burns, meanwhile, concluded his campaign 3-under 277.

The 29-year-old Burns later shared what his dad said to him after missing birdies on the final two holes.

“He just said he was really proud,” an emotional Burns told reporters. “I think we both knew how special it could have been for Father’s Day, but I know he’s proud.”

Burns had a great front nine on the final day of the US Open, recording four birdies and finishing that stretch 3-under 32. He then had five consecutive pars until a bogey on the 15th hole and a birdie on the 14th.

Ultimately, Burns ran out of gas, as Clark’s big lead in his wire-to-wire victory proved to be enough to weather the charge of the rest of the field.

The runner-up finish to Clark is now Burns’ best finish in a major tournament, previously a T-7 at this year’s Masters Tournament.

While Burns has yet to win a start in the 2026 PGA Tour season, he is 12-of-15 with eight top 25s and two top 5s.
