Saints’ Mickey Loomis releases heartfelt statement on Taysom Hill departure

Taysom Hill’s nine-year run in New Orleans has officially come to an end, and the Saints made sure to send him off the right way. The team released statements from both Hill and general manager Mickey Loomis on the first day of training camp, closing the book on one of the most unique careers in franchise history.

Hill, who became a free agent this offseason, confirmed a return to New Orleans is not in the cards.

“I’ve taken time this offseason to think carefully about what comes next for my family and me,” Hill said. “I still don’t have a clear answer about what the future holds, but I know that returning to New Orleans is not in the cards. As training camp begins, I didn’t want my silence to be misinterpreted, and as hard as it is to put into words, I wanted to express my gratitude.”

Loomis responded with a tribute of his own, reflecting on everything Hill brought to the organization over nearly a decade.

“Taysom’s career to this point as a member of the Saints organization has been remarkable in all facets,” Loomis said. “His intelligence, unique athletic ability, versatility and unselfishness have benefited this team in many facets for the past nine seasons. Additionally, he’s been a great teammate and excellent leader and mentor. We thank Taysom for all his great contributions, and we are positive that a day will come when all of his accomplishments can be properly celebrated.”

Hill joined the Saints in 2017 and carved out a role unlike almost any other in the league, playing quarterback, running back, tight end, and special teams gunner depending on the situation.

He leaves New Orleans as the only player in the Super Bowl era to record at least 1,000 career rushing, receiving, and passing yards, finishing with 2,551 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground, 1,034 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns through the air, and 2,426 passing yards with 12 touchdowns as a part-time quarterback.

Hill stopped short of announcing retirement, leaving open the possibility he could sign elsewhere if the right opportunity comes along. For now, though, one of the most unpredictable and entertaining chapters in recent Saints history has closed, even if the final page on his playing career has yet to be written.
