Sabres’ Tage Thompson gives credit to fans in incredible comeback win
The Buffalo Sabres made their first playoff appearance since 2011 on Sunday, and they made sure it would be one fans would never forget for a long time.
The Sabres appeared to be circling down the drain in Game 1 of their series at KeyBank Center in Buffalo against the Boston Bruins, when the visiting squad scored the first two goals of the contest.
Despite trailing 2-0 early in the third period, Tage Thompson and the Bruins refused to back down, as the Sabres responded with a barrage that completely stunned Boston.
Thompson scored two goals just minutes apart in the final period to tie the score at 2-2. Mattias Samuelsson followed that up with another goal to put Buffalo ahead, 3-2. Alex Tuch added to the score with an empty-netter with a little over a minute left in regulation. David Pastrnak scored on the power-play for Boston, but the Bruins simply ran out of time to mount a comeback.
Of course, Thompson was ecstatic after Buffalo’s thrilling victory, and he credited Sabres fans afterward.
“These are the games that you dream of. … So happy to finally be here,” Thompson said in a postgame interview, as he also became the first Buffalo player since Thomas Vanek in 2011 to score multiple goals in a playoff game, via ESPN.
Buffalo flustered the Bruins to turn things around in the series opener, with the Sabres outshooting Boston, 38-20. The Sabres also outhit the Bruins by a huge margin, 53-38.
Thompson and the Sabres will go for a 2-0 lead on Tuesday before the series shifts to Beantown for Game 3 and Game 4.
