Rumor: Gary Trent Jr. expected to decline $3.9 million player option

The Milwaukee Bucks have entered a transitional period for the franchise, which will mean a lot of changes moving forward. After trading away superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks are looking to bring in young players and future draft assets they can use to rebuild the organization.

The NBA Draft was a busy one for the Bucks, who drafted Brayden Burries and Nate Ament in the first round after receiving the 13th overall pick from the Heat. Now, it appears they may be on the verge of seeing another player head out in Gary Trent Jr.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reports that, “Milwaukee Bucks sharpshooter Gary Trent Jr. has become a desirable target for teams coveting knockdown shooting to bolster roster. He is expected to decline $3.9 million player option to hit open market.”

Gary Trent Jr. is coming off a season in which he played 65 games for the Bucks, including 21 starts. He averaged 8.1 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.2 assist sper game while shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 36 percent from three.

For his career, however, Trent Jr. has been a 38.7 percent three-point shooter and will be able to help a team in need of shooting and floor-spacing around their stars. Teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and Detroit Pistons could all use his services as they look to surround their stars with enough three-point shooting come playoff time.

Free agency is set to kick off on June 30th, with teams eligible to begin speaking and negotiating with free agents.
