Rumor: Baker Mayfield turned down ‘multiple’ short-term extension offers

Baker Mayfield appears to be highly motivated to play well and lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers deep into the postseason after the negotiations that took place this summer.

Mayfield did not get the contract extension he was looking for from the Bucs, and expressed his frustrations about that during a post-practice press conference earlier this week.

“I’ve been pretty upfront and honest about my feelings about Tampa being home for now our family, raising kids herem” Mayfield told reporters. “We love it here. I wanted the deal done and set the deadline and told them it was gonna be all ball after that. And I did mean that. I don’t know if they thought I was just gonna take some of the offers that they gave, but I’m at the point of my career and Understanding what I’ve brought to this franchise. I’m very very thankful for the chance They gave me, do not get me wrong on that.

“But I also know I really know what I’ve brought to this franchise, leadership wise and even play wise. It’s been some of the best years of my career and I think it’s only gonna trend upwards, just being comfortable and feeling that, so it’s disappointing in that regard to feel disrespect a little bit. That’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after you know thinking you’ve earned it. This is not a poor me thing it’s there’s a lot other people that have it were way worse off, but I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories that I deserve to be compensated for that. I think I’m a franchise quarterback. ”

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, Mayfield received multiple offers from the Buccaneers that the franchise believed was fair, including ones that would’ve reportedly paid him more than the $50 million he was looking for.

“Baker Mayfield is gonna be motivated by this. And you know what? That may not be a bad thing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, f they have to address this contract situation after the year because he played so well because he was motivated by this. That’s called a good problem to have. Now, Mayfield said he was offered a two-year deal. He says he wasn’t in the realm of $50+ million per year, that group of quarterbacks. From my understanding, that is not the case now. This is where it gets a little hairy. He’s got one year on his deal right now. They offered him two new years and new money and my understanding is there were multiple offers from the Buccaneers that were over $50 million dollars. Now you could say as a quarterback, I deserve a five-year extension like we’ve seen franchise quarterbacks get and not only two years and maybe that’s the part of it that he felt disrespected over. I don’t know the specifics of that part. He could also maybe have been averaging out the three years and coming up less than $50 million. That’s not how it works. It’s all about the new money and what’s being offered on top of what’s already on the books. Regardless the Buccaneers felt like they made a fair offer albeit on the shorter side than we often see for quarterbacks.”

Since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023, Baker Mayfield has played the best football of his career. Mayfield has not missed a single game in his three season here, playing all 51 games while leadign the Bucs to the postseason in the first two seasons. Mayfield has thrown for an average of 4,079 yards over those seasons and combiend for 95 touchdowns — or about 31.6 per season.
