Royal Ascot history made in £800k opener as 50/1 shock winner pulls off 76-year first

History was made in the opening race at Royal Ascot on Tuesday afternoon as Ten Bob Tony claimed glory.

The 50/1 shot equalled the record for the longest ever priced winner of the Queen Anne Stakes by finishing strongly.

Ten Bob Tony, trained by Ed Walker, was not expected to be amongst those challenging at the front in the final furlongs.

And he wasn’t, until he raced up the inside of leader Opera Ballo and the challenging More Thunder, moving to the front on the line.

It was a huge moment in Royal Ascot history and what better race for it to happen in than the opener on Tuesday?

Ten Bob Tony was 50/1 in the betting but took home the £453,680 prize from the whopping £800,000 prize pot.

And by doing so, the horse became the longest-priced winner since Garrick in 1950 to win the Queen Anne Stakes.

Speaking after winning the race, jockey Kieran Shoemark told ITV Racing: “He just travelled superbly.

“We wanted to ride him to run well today…he’s clearly in a good vein of form, somewhat surprised but delighted.”

Trainer Walker then said: “Fair play to [owners] Simon Sadler and TBT racing, he won at Epsom, he’s fresh and it’s like a carpet out there.

“We thought we’d drop him out, ride him cold…we had a go and Kieran nailed it.”

He added: “You’ve got to have a go, you can’t win sitting at home, can you?”

A royal welcome

Ten Bob Tony was ridden to glory by Shoemark in front of the King, as King Charles and Queen Camilla watched on.

Members of the royal family arrived at Ascot just minutes before the Queen Anne Stakes and saw the electric start.

They will be in attendance to watch the remainder of the action on Tuesday, including the King Charles III Stakes.

The Coventry Stakes, St James’s Palace Stakes, Ascot Stakes, Wolferton Stakes and Copper Horse Stakes complete the schedule.
