Ronda Rousey recalls mixed experience with WWE under Vince McMahon’s ‘death throes’

With just a handful of days left for her MMA comeback fight against Gina Carano on Netflix, UFC and WWE legend Ronda Rousey recently appeared on Complex News. Speaking about her return fight, Rousey also addressed her mixed reaction to her WWE run under Vince McMahon.

Almost a decade ago, Rousey made her WWE debut at WrestleMania 34 in 2018. Shortly after she became one of the most dominant and ruthless women on the roster. However, Rousey believes she never played her true self on WWE television.

“I felt like I was doing somebody else’s impression of myself [in WWE],” said Rousey. “You can tell when I was allowed to write my own promos and when I wasn’t, you know, and I learned a lot from it. And I really, you know, enjoyed my time in the ring. I didn’t really enjoy being under the death throes of Vince McMahon’s reign. But there were a lot of great experiences in there.”

She also opened up on how Vince McMahon never wanted to collaborate with her during her second run in WWE. “The second run, Vince was just more far gone and more difficult to work with and there was a lot of inner turmoil going on in the company,” she said. “It was kind of a s*** show. Nobody ever knew what was going on, and you would get to the arena and be made to do something that somebody threw in your lap that hadn’t thought about it until 15 minutes before.”

Rousey is scheduled to fight Gina Carano in May. 2026 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, California. The fight will be under the banner of Jake Paul’s MVP and streamed live on Netflix.
