Roma vs Atalanta predictions and betting tips – European rivals do battle

Roma and Atalanta are both in the mix for European qualification in Serie A, but at least one of the two teams will drop points when they go head-to-head this weekend.

Will Roma get the job done in front of their own fans at the Stadio Olimpico, or can Atalanta pick up a victory in the Italian capital?

Roma vs Atalanta predictions

Inter are on course to win the scudetto, while two out of three relegation spots are essentially decided, with the remaining one likely to be filled by either Lecce or Cremonese.

That makes the race for Europe the most intriguing thing to watch in Serie A across the final six rounds of fixtures.

Napoli look set to join Inter in next season’s Champions League, but there are still two qualification berths up for grabs.

AC Milan on 63 points are in the strongest position, but back-to-back defeats have seen nerves begin to creep in. Max Allegri’s men are followed by Juventus in fourth on 60 points, with fifth-placed Como two behind on 58.

Roma on 57 are very much still in the picture, but Atalanta on 53 will struggle to climb into the top four at this late stage of proceedings. However, with seventh likely to be enough for the Conference League and sixth for the Europa League, Atalanta still have plenty to play for.

For a while it looked like Roma might be able to challenge for the title. After 12 games they sat at the summit of the standings. In the middle of January they were only four points adrift of top spot.

But Roma were unable to sustain a challenge. Four wins in their 11 games has seen them drop down the table, putting their hopes of Champions League football in doubt.

Roma were always unlikely to be able to compete for the scudetto in Gian Piero Gasperini’s maiden season at the helm. But having spent the majority of the campaign in the top four, it would be hugely disappointing to miss out on Europe’s premier tournament.

Roma do not have to face anyone in the top five in their final six matches, but the bookies offer shorter odds on a top-four finish for Napoli, AC Milan, Juventus and Como.

Atalanta, whom Gasperini left last summer after nine successful years in charge, have done well to remain in the European picture following the departure of their long-time manager at the end of last season.

Ivan Juric, Gasperini’s successor, did not last long, with Raffaele Palladino replacing him in the Gewiss Stadium hot seat in November.

Since then, only Inter, Napoli, Juventus and AC Milan have collected more points than Atalanta, who are also involved in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

Roma vs Atalanta betting tips

Roma face Atalanta as both teams look to boost their chances of European qualification.

Roma to edge it

This is a hard game to call. Neither team is in particularly good form. Roma have won just two of their last eight matches in all competitions. For Atalanta, it is two victories in nine.

On balance, though, we just above favour Roma. For one, they breezed past Pisa 3-0 last weekend and have now won four of their last five Serie A games on home turf.

More broadly, only Inter and Napoli have collected more points in front of their own fans than Roma this season.

Atalanta, for their part, rank only ninth in the league on their travels. Roma should edge Saturday’s showdown in the capital.

Goals at a premium

There tends to be relatively few goals in matches involving either Roma or Atalanta.

Roma’s games average just 2.28 goals this term, while Atalanta are even lower in that particular ranking on 2.25.

The reverse fixture contained just one strike, with Giorgio Scalvini’s effort earning Atalanta a 1-0 victory in Bergamo.

One goal might be enough to win this match too. Even if it is not, the evidence points to a low-scoring encounter.

Malen in fine form

There were few better January signings anywhere in Europe than that which brought Donyell Malen to Roma.

The Aston Villa loanee, who will make the move to Roma permanent in the summer, has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances for his new club.

Ten of those have come in Serie A, including a tremendous hat-trick against Pisa last weekend.

Although he only moved to Italy in the winter window, Malen is already the joint-fourth highest scorer in the league this campaign.

He can add another goal to his impressive tally when Atalanta head to the Stadio Olimpico.
