Robin van Persie responds to own fans chanting ‘shame on you’ at team

Robin van Persie has hit back chants aimed at his players from his own fans during their latest disappointing result.

His Feyenoord side were held to a goalless draw away at relegation-threatened Volendam on Sunday.

The result leaves the visitors just a point clear in second place in the Eredivisie as they chase Champions League qualification.

It also leaves Feyenoord with just one win in their last five league matches dating back to the start of March.

Their travelling fans did not hold back with their assessment of the performance against Volendam.

Chants of ‘Shame on you!’ could be heard from the away end during the match, Dutch media reports.

What did Van Persie say?

However, Van Persie has defended his players after being asked about the reaction from their supporters.

Speaking post-match, via VI, he admitted: “It certainly wasn’t fantastic, we need to defend better and we should have created more.

“It was enough to score one, but it should have been more.”

As for whether he agreed with the chants, he said: “No. They worked hard, everyone saw that.

“We could have made it easier for ourselves by being better on the ball.”

Aymen Sliti missed Feyenoord’s best chance of the match as they were forced to settle for a point.

Van Persie felt the winger should have done better with the opportunity, which could have proved to be the winner.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker said: “That one should have been on target in any case.

“Sliti gets into the right position after a good run, but it should have been at least on target.

“They also had two or three clear-cut chances, and we had enough to score today as well. As the second half progressed, it did get sloppier and we weren’t good enough on the ball.”

Van Persie has been in charge of Feyenoord since February 2025, with his current deal running until the end of next season.

Having drawn with Ajax before the international break, they remain in a tussle with NEC Nijmegen for second place.

Although PSV have already secured the title, this season’s runners-up will join them in the league phase of next term’s Champions League.

Feyenoord are a point ahead of NEC with five matches remaining, with the two sides meeting in Nijmegen next weekend.
