Reds pitcher Hunter Greene gets huge injury update on Thursday

The Cincinnati Reds have been plagued by injuries to their pitching staff this year. Hunter Greene has yet to make his season debut after Greene was injured during spring training.

The Reds pitcher needed surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow in March. Now, a timeline for his possible return is being given, per Charlie Goldsmith of FOX19.

“Hunter Greene will throw his first bullpen on the 26th. He’s set to join the team on the 29th,” Goldsmith posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Joining the team is likely to mean rehab starts for the pitcher. Most likely, Greene will spend some time with the Chattanooga Lookouts of Double-A and the Louisville Bats of Triple-A

Greene pitched just 19 starts in 2025, also missing time with an injury that season. Still, he was solid in his starts, going 7-4 with a 2.76 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. In his major league career, spanning from 2022 through 2025, all with the Reds, he is 25-29 in 91 starts in his career. He has a 3.65 career ERA with a 1.14 WHIP.

Getting one of their top pitchers back will be big for the pitching staff, who recently had to add Chris Paddack due to injuries. The Reds are 27th in the majors in team ERA, while sitting 29th in WHIP and 22nd in opponent batting average. Only Chase Burns has a pitching WAR over one. He is 4-1 with a 2.11 ERA this year. Meanwhile, many of the other starters have struggled. Andrew Abbott, Brady Singer, and Rhett Lowder all have ERAs over 4.40 and records at .500 or worse.
