Red Sox’s Sonny Gray makes unique MLB history, and it has nothing to do with no-hit bid
The Boston Red Sox escaped a sudden New York Yankees surge after Sonny Gray stepped out. Gray carried a no-hitter through seven innings before the visitors finally got a hit. Boston snatched the 5-4 win in extra innings, which saw Gray make unique MLB history.
But it has zero to do with his no-hitter bid.
The account OptaSTATS revealed the new accolade the right-handed pitcher delivered.
“Tonight, Sonny Gray became the first pitcher in the modern era (since 1900) to reach 2000 career strikeouts and 2000.0 innings pitched in the same game,” the account posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Gray secured strikeout No. 2,000 in the eighth inning, fanning Spencer Jones for the first out during that sequence.

Gray hit more rare history, per MLB analytics expert Sarah Langs.
“He’s the first former Yankees pitcher with a no-hit bid of at least seven innings against the Yankees since 6/30/57 Ralph Terry (7 1/3 IP),” Langs posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. “Terry, of course, ended up back on NYY eventually.”
There’s no thought of Gray making his way back to the team he played for from 2017 to 2018. He’s clearly more beloved in Beantown. Especially after keeping the Red Sox’s historic rival on their heels.
Gray dished nine strikeouts total. He fanned Jazz Chisolm and Spencer Jones twice before his no-hit bid broke up. Amed Rosario disrupted Gray’s hitless bid by pounding a single. Manager Chad Tracy eventually decided to pull Gray, who drew hordes of cheers.
New York attempted its comeback, though, after Gray got pulled. The Yankees forced extra innings by scoring two runs in the ninth. Jarren Duran produced the walk-off RBI single to right field to win in extra innings. But Gray rose as the horse who carried Boston.
