Red Sox rumors: What gives Alex Cora ‘security’ over other struggling managers

The Boston Red Sox have gotten out to a brutal 9-15 start to their 2026 campaign. Many would assume manager Alex Cora would be on the hot seat.

Of course, the Red Sox are closely monitoring the situation. But based on his contract and past success, Cora’s seat is cooler than other managers around the league, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

“Cora is in the second year of a three-year $21.75 million contract, that alone gives him some security. They gave him that contract because they believe in him. I don’t expect him to be on the same kind of hot seat.”

Rosenthal didn’t rule out the Red Sox ultimately going on a playoff run. He noted that alongside their current roster finding their footing, Boston will likely need to add externally as well. If their 2026 season continues down a slope though, both Cora and general manager Craig Breslow’s seats will become much hotter.

Over his eight years at the helm, Cora has led the Red Sox to a 619-539 record. Boston has made the playoffs three times and won the World Series back in 2018. Red Sox decision makers remain hopeful that Cora is still right manager to lead him.

Ultimately though, Boston will need to produce results. The team has lost four of their last five games and are on the verge of being swept by the New York Yankees. Cora and the Red Sox still have plenty of time to turn things around in 2026. But the manager’s seat will eventually get hot if the wins don’t start coming in.
