Red Sox rumors: The 4 players Boston is fielding trade calls on
The Boston Red Sox are attempting to maintain a posture that they can still contend for a spot in the American League playoffs this season even though they are in last place in the American League East. Despite a lineup that lacks power and features multiple players who did not figure in the team’s offseason plans, the Red Sox are still hoping to make a run at the postseason.
That may not be realistic. The Red Sox are looking up at the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. While they are just 3 1/2 games out of the last Wild Card spot in the American League, that’s more about the lack of quality in the AL this season.
Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow may come to the conclusion that the team will not go on the long winning streak that is needed to become a legitimate playoff contender. That could turn the Red Sox into sellers by the trade deadline. Breslow is reportedly taking calls on a number of players who could be moved at some point.
The Red Sox have three catchers in Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez and Mickey Gasper, and Wong seems to be attracting attention. Additionally, the team’s relief pitchers Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten could all help multiple contenders.
Breslow is not interested in trading any of those relief pitchers yet, but that could change in a matter of just a couple of weeks if the Red Sox don’t show dramatic improvement.
