Red Sox offensive ineptitude showcased by these 3 key players

Nine and a half games back of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox have a few things that need to be fixed. Longtime manager Alex Cora was fired a couple of weeks ago. Injuries have continued to mount, with left fielder Roman Anthony becoming the latest contributor on the shelf. However, Boston’s offense has likely been its biggest Achilles heel. According to team beat reporter Tim Healey via X (formerly Twitter), the Red Sox have three of MLB’s bottom 10 hitters by wRC+, led by shortstop Trevor Story.

Story, Durbin, and Duran were all counted on to be key pieces of the Red Sox lineup. Story is coming off his best year with Boston, hitting .263 with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs in 2025. Durbin was acquired this spring in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, coming off a productive rookie campaign. Duran, meanwhile, has regressed sharply despite having the two best seasons of his career so far over the last couple of campaigns.

All three hitters are hitting .200 or worse, as Story’s .200 batting average is the best of an abysmal bunch. Durbin was expected to help replace former star third baseman Alex Bregman, but his .173 average is just the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile, Duran’s decision-making has come under fire this season once again.

Firing Cora and a few coaches was just the start. A sweep of the Detroit Tigers looked like it could be the start of something for Boston. Then, the Rays came into town and won two out of three, with a rainout cancelling any chance at a series split for the Red Sox. Now, another underachieving projected contender, the Philadelphia Phillies, are set to come to Fenway for an interleague clash. Can Story, Durbin, Duran, and the rest of the Sox offense wake up? If not, there could be wholesale changes in Boston by season’s end.
