Red Sox makes surprising pitching promotion after losing to Yankees

The Boston Red Sox are coming off a 4-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Giancarlo Stanton owned the Red Sox pitching, hitting a home run while going two for four with three RBIs.

After the game, the Red Sox made a surprising move, calling up a minor league pitcher, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.

“Red Sox calling up pitching prospect Eduardo Rivera, who has never pitched above Double-A,” Cotiollo posted on X, formerly Twitter.

In a corresponding move, Jack Anderson has been sent to Triple-A Worcester, and Triston Casas has been placed on the 60-day IL, making a spot on the 40-man roster.

Rivera was an 11th-round selection of the Athletics in 2021, but never moved past Single-A and was released from the system in the spring of 2024. The Red Sox then picked him up, and he went to the Florida Complex League. He would work his way up to the Double-A ranks in 2025 and has made two starts for Double-A Portland so far this year. In his two starts, he has pitched ten innings, striking out 16 batters with a 0.90 ERA.

Rivera was also a pitcher for Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic. He pitched 6.2 innings, striking out nine batters. He had a 4.05 ERA in his two appearances at the WBC.

The bullpen could use some help in terms of pitchers who could eat innings. They used seven relievers on Monday and two on Tuesday. One of the two was Anderson, who was sent to the minors. With Sonny Gray injured, the Sox are currently carrying nine arms in the bullpen.

Game two between the Red Sox and Yankees is set for Wednesday night, with Max Fried taking the mound for the Yanks and Ranger Suarez for the Sox.
