Red Sox lose pitcher to injured list before Yankees clash

As the Boston Red Sox head into their third month of the season, the season has been fairly disastrous for a team that made it to the postseason a year ago and had designs on contending in the American League East this year. The last-place team is looking for any kind of good news it can get, as the Sox have combined poor play with injuries.

The Red Sox are preparing for the middle game of a three-game series with the Yankees in New York after winning the opener. However, Boston interim manager Chad Tracy awoke to the news of yet another pitching injury. Left-hander Jovani Moran is going on the 15-day Injured List due to elbow inflammation.

While Moran is not the mainstay of the team’s pitching staff — that title goes to injured starter Garrett Crochet — his absence means that the team had to call up fellow left-hander Alec Gamboa from Triple-A Worcester.

Moran has pitched in 21 games for the Red Sox, primarily out of the bullpen. He has pitched 33.0 inning and has an 0-1 record with a 3.00 earned run average.

The Red Sox have actually played fairly well on the road this season. They have a 17-14 record when they are away from Fenway Park. However, they have played at a shockingly poor level at home. Boston has just a 10-21 record when playing in front of the Green Monster.

While the Moran injury is somewhat problematic, the Red Sox appear to have the pitching depth to make up for his absence. However, the problem throughout the season has been the team’s lack of offense. The Red Sox have hit just 62 home runs this season and that ranks 29th out of the 30 big-league teams.
