Red Sox fire Alex Cora, other coaches after 10-17 start to season

The Boston Red Sox ran away with an easy 17-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak. Although it was an impressive victory, the organization is moving on from manager Alex Cora, after announcing his firing.

Reports indicate that the Red Sox are firing Cora, along with several other coaches, after the team’s 10-17 start to the 2026 campaign, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Boston chooses to clean house early in the season.

“The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora, hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Rámon Vazquez, and game-planning coach Jason Varitek, sources tell ESPN,” reported Passan. “While the Red Sox won today, they are 10-17 and in last [place] in the American League East. Massive change is coming in Boston.”

Alex Cora ends his time as the manager of the Red Sox after working in that position for eight seasons. He was originally hired in 2018, stepped away in 2020 after being suspended for his alleged involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal in 2017, and then assumed his role with Boston again in 2021.

The 50-year-old former player turned manager has won three World Series throughout his career in baseball. One of which came in 2018 during his first year with the Red Sox. Unfortunately, Boston has only reached the playoffs twice since that championship win.

For now, it remains unclear who will step in as the interim manager to finish the 2026 campaign. That announcement should be made relatively soon, as the Red Sox are scheduled to take on the Orioles again on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. EST.
