Red Sox fill out interim coaching staff after Jason Varitek, other assistants fired

It was a miserable start to the season for the Boston Red Sox. As the Red Sox sat in last place in the AL East, they decided to move on from Alex Cora as manager and remove many of his assistants, including Jason Varitek.

Now, the Red Sox have announced the addition of three more coaches to the major league staff, according to a post made on X, formerly Twitter.

With Chad Tracy installed as the interim manager, Jose David Flores will be the Interim Bench Coach, Pablo Cabrera will be the Interim First Base Coach/Outfield Instructor, and Jack Simonetty will be the Interim Hitting Assistant.

Flores played in the minor leagues, never making it out of the farm system in five seasons. Since then, he has begun working as a coach. He was the manager of the Dominican Summer League Indiana, and then worked as the Chicago Cubs’ infield coordinator. In 2018, he moved to the Philadelphia Phillies, initially in the minors and then as the first base coach. He has also coached with the Baltimore Orioles before being the bench coach of the Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate. He became the first base coach heading into the 2025 campaign, and now will be the bench coach.

Cabrera comes in with less experience. He was hired by the club in 2023, working as a coach in Double-A Portland. He would then work as a defensive coach in the club’s Fort Myers complex before moving to the infield/outfield defensive coordinator this season.

Simonetty was originally hired to work as a video associate at the Triple-A level in 2023. Last year, he worked with Single-A Salem as an assistant hitting coach, and was a hitting coach for the Florida Complex League Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox are set to continue their season on Monday night, visiting the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game series.
